To bring more traffic to your website it is crucial that you get your website ranking high on search engines like Google. Even after SEO has been done to your website it still might not rank high on search engines. The reason behind this could be that your website may have poor domain authority.
Now you’re probably asking yourself, “what is domain authority?”. Domain authority is a search engine ranking score that was created by a software company known as Moz. Every website gets a score ranked between 1 and 100, with the higher end of the scale representing a better outcome. Finding out your domain authority (DA) score can be very helpful for improving your website’s rankings.
How Domain Authority is Calculated
There are 40 factors that are taken into account when calculating a DA score. One of the more important factors would be inbound links to your website. Inbound links can be a great help to reaching a higher DA score particularly if they are from authoritative websites. However inbound links from non-authoritative websites can actually hurt your website and give you a lower DA score.
As well as this it is important to keep your website updated and to make sure that inbound links are coming from different websites. The reason behind this is that links from different websites are more valuable than links from the same website. For example, 1,000 backlinks from a 1,000 different websites would be much more beneficial than 1,000 backlinks from 250 different websites.
Issues with Domain Authority
Although domain authority is something very important for you website there are still a few issues with it that can’t really be fixed. One issue with the Moz scoring system is that the higher your score is the harder it is to improve upon. For example you would have to work much harder to improve your score from 70 than you would if your DA was 20. This means that no matter how great a campaign you can devise there will still be less impact on your DA score if it’s already high.
Furthermore, it is also possible that your domain authority can drop without any changes even being made to your website. This happens when a globally popular site such as Facebook improves this automatically pushes your site down the search ranks and will lower your score.
Essentially this means that your website is always compared to the websites with the highest domain authority such as Wikipedia, Facebook, Twitter, etc. which little can be done to compete with. Because of this, we advise that your goal should always be to get a higher DA score than your main competitors and not to try aim for the higher DA score possible as it will cost a lot of time and money.
Due to these limitations you should not use your DA score as a sole indicator to how well your website is doing. Your DA score should be used amongst other information to help determine how well your website is doing and how you can improve.
One last thing to remember is that a new website’s DA score will always be one. So, if your website is brand new and your not seeing good DA scores don’t panic as getting a good DA score can take some time and certainly a lot of effort.
